Port Macquarie-Hastings Waste Management Strategy

This consultation has concluded.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is currently developing a five year Waste Management Strategy. Council aims to have the Strategy adopted by the end of 2011 so that contract negotiations with suppliers can be managed under the new Strategy.

Managing waste is one of the greatest environmental issues facing the community today. The challenge is to reduce wastes and in the process, to build business opportunities for recycling, composting and the recovery of wastes, which would otherwise be sent to landfill.

The Strategy will affect how we collect and dispose of waste, how we recycle, what the policies are and importantly how as a community we can reduce our long term reliance on landfilling.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's ultimate goal is no waste to landfill by 2020. There are two fundamental ways to reduce waste to landfill; either behavioural change or by asking users to pay more. This discussion forum will help Council understand the community's opinions on these options.

We're ready to listen!

The implementation of the Waste Management Strategy may involve changes to the current services, their frequency or other waste disposal means. In order for any change to be effective Council is interested in making sure it is communicated in a way which will have the most impact.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council offers a range of waste services to residents including weekly rubbish and green waste collection, fortnightly recycling collections as well as a bulky goods kerbside pick-up service and multiple waste transfer stations where you can deliver waste. We are interested in your opinion of these services, how regularly you use them and if they meet your waste disposal needs.

The alternative to behavioural change is pricing policy. Currently the average residential charge for waste services is around $350 a year. If pricing was releated to frequency of collection what would you be prepared to pay?

Examples of behavioural change that can significantly reduce the amount of waste to landfill include changing your buying patterns, buying in bulk or buying products with less packaging etc.
