There is a direct relationship between traffic density (congestion), public transport convenience, the cost of car parking and an individual’s decision to drive.  The more convenient parking is and the less the congestion a driver experiences the more likely we are to use the private car for trips, particularly for work.

Would you consider taking a bus for your work trips or sharing a car with someone else? Do you plan multiple tasks in one trip or find you are taking lots of separate car trips to and from home?

Public transport is a real issuein this debate. The current service does not suit the working person and therefore we fall back on the car as the preferred means to get to town for jobs etc. It is and imperative for Council, community members and the bus service provider to sit down and nut this one out. There is not good reason that routes, times and small buses could not be implemented.

For those people who don't live in Port it makes sense to plan multiple tasks in one trip and save the costs of running a car long distances. Public transport is seldom convenient in such situations. I think that if paid parking was introduced in the Port Macquarie CBD it would certainly help reduce congestion but it would need to be supported by the availability of peripheral free parking and some efficient form of shuttle bus.

I would like to see a rest area on the fringe of port so when I come there for appointments there is a good road side rest area so if I arrive early i have some where to relax and have a coffee without going into town an hour early this would save atleast one parking space and if this was near the HWY it could service the highway as well many travel in self sufficient vehicles. Also could you inform Rob Oakshot that a rest area is required between harrington turn off and taree as this is where I almost fall asleep when heading south from up north I live near forster and every time I return I get very sleepy along this streach of road. But for around Port CBD the parking is adequate I have never had to drive around looking for a park when I visit port but more 2 hour areas would be good.

There are very few cycleways in the Port Macquarie area and the CBD has NO cycling facilities. If Council were to improve cycling infrastructure in the area, they may encourage people to leave their cars at home and consider cycling. They should bear in mind that one less car = 1 less parking space required.
