Revising The Parking Strategy

Have Your Say in revising the Port Macquarie Hastings Parking Strategy

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has commenced a formal review of the parking strategy for the three major centres across the local government area.

 

Council adopted a Carparking Strategy on 1st December 2003 and only minor changed have been made in that time. Given the changes in the population and economy since the adoption of the strategy its currency is now questionable and Council is undertaking a formal review of the parking strategy.

 

The review will include this online discussion forum as well as a community survey, stakeholder workshops and information sessions and a public exhibition of the revised Strategy.

 

The revised Parking Strategy will include a range of short, medium and long term actions covering, policy, land development, engineering works, design and regulatory controls. The Strategy will focus on the Port Macquarie, Wauchope & Laurieton town centres.

Research shows that for town centre parking to work efficiently and effectively and remain attractive to consumers there needs to be at least 15% of car spaces available at any time of the day. This eliminates ‘cruise parking’, it speeds traffic circulation and reduces congestion and consumers know there will be parks available so they don’t avoid the area.

How often and where, do you find yourself in congested traffic due to having to ‘cruise’ for a park?

Time Limits or Payment to Increase Availability

The most common ways to create 15% availability of parking spaces is either through time limits or by parking fees. What is your opinion on the effectiveness of paid parking, versus increasing time limited parking in order to increase parking space turnover?

There is a direct relationship between traffic density (congestion), public transport convenience, the cost of car parking and an individual’s decision to drive.  The more convenient parking is and the less the congestion a driver experiences the more likely we are to use the private car for trips, particularly for work.

Would you consider taking a bus for your work trips or sharing a car with someone else? Do you plan multiple tasks in one trip or find you are taking lots of separate car trips to and from home?

One of the challenges of the Port Macquarie Town Centre is balancing the parking needs of employees or workers with the needs of the visitors and consumers who support these businesses. Do you think there should be special provision for employees parking and if so who should be responsible for providing that parking, Council or the employers?
